Here's the counterintuitive thing about Singapore: eating out is often cheaper than cooking. Hawker center meals cost S$3โ6, while imported groceries are expensive. Budget S$400โ600/month for food if you eat at hawker centers most meals. A meal at a mid-range restaurant runs S$25โ40.
Transport is cheap and excellent. MRT (metro) rides cost S$1โ3, monthly pass around S$120. No car needed (and you wouldn't want one, a basic car costs S$100,000+ with COE certificate).

Use it as a hub. Budget airlines (Scoot, AirAsia, Jetstar) connect Singapore to Bali (2h), Bangkok (2.5h), Hanoi (3.5h), and more for $50โ150 return. Your Singapore sabbatical can include weekends in Borneo, weeks in Vietnam, or a month in Sri Lanka.
Nature within the city. MacRitchie Reservoir treetop walk, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve (primary rainforest), Southern Ridges trail, and Gardens by the Bay. Singapore is genuinely green despite being a city-state.
Underestimating costs. Singapore is NOT budget Southeast Asia. It's more expensive than many European capitals. Don't plan a Thai budget for a Singapore stay.
